Colon Resection

Home  /  Colon Resection

Large bowel resection is surgery to remove all or part of your large bowel. This surgery is also called colectomy. The large bowel is also called the large intestine or colon.

Removal of the entire colon and the rectum is called a proctocolectomy. Removal of part or all of the colon but not the rectum is called subtotal colectomy.

The large bowel connects the small intestine to the anus. Normally, stool passes through the large bowel before leaving the body through the anus.

Removal is usually due a recurrent inflammation (diverticulitis), specific complicated inflammation (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease), or tumor (large benign tumors or cancers).

Resection can be done through minimally invasive methods (laparoscopy). It is the standard in GBMC since Dr. Ahmad Bashir joined the Jordan Hospital family in 2010. Righ or left hemicolectomy, Sigmoidectomy, Low-Anterior Rectal, or Abdomino-Perineal resections are done at GBMC with great oncologic results.

A special area of interest for Dr. Ahmad Bashir also, is Cytoreduction with Heated Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) for mucinous adenocarcinoma with peritoneal carcinomatosis. He also has done the first case in Jordan Hospital in 2011.
