Adhesions

Home  /  Adhesions

Adhesions usually occur after previous surgery or prior intra-abdominal infection. Adhesions have a wide range of presentations. They can be completely harmless and cause no problems to the patients throughout their lifetime. However, they can present with recurrent abdominal pain with no other findings after extensive workup. They can also present with recurrent partial bowel obstruction, or even complete obstruction in rare instances.

If they are causing symptoms then they require surgical treatment. This is definitely advised laparoscopically, since open surgery causes enough adhesions on its own. Anti-adhesive gel, spray or sheets may also needed to be used, especially if dense adhesions are encountered. All of the above can be done at GBMC with great experience. Even if multiple prior operations are done, our experience with gaining laparoscopic space is excellent, with great patient outcome and satisfaction.
